Help Build 28.08% Ultra-efficient Solar Cells, What are the Advantages of Tandem Solar Cells?

Recently, a piece of news that the Yellow River Company has built a solar cell with an efficiency of 28.08% has attracted the attention of many photovoltaic people. Behind the ultra-high solar cell efficiency, a more important technology is also mentioned, which is the laminated solar cell.

In the past two decades, photovoltaic technology has undergone several changes, from the earliest BSF cells to PERC cells, and now TOPCon and heterojunction cells have also begun to emerge. In the case of steady cost reduction, efficiency has continued to improve, which has increased the competitiveness of photovoltaics.

However, although many companies have increased the efficiency of solar cells to more than 25%, and have also created photovoltaic modules with an efficiency of more than 22%, solar cells using only a single absorber material have very limited potential for improving conversion efficiency. Great progress is almost impossible.

Therefore, it is necessary to improve efficiency and increase power generation by absorbing more sunlight. The use of two or more solar cells to absorb sunlight has also become one of the development directions. Simply put, it is to stack solar cells of different materials to absorb more sunlight. Such solar cells are called laminated cells.

This time, Yellow River’s solar cells used two different types of solar cells, crystalline silicon and perovskite. Among them, the bottom cell is an N-type TOPCon cell, and the top cell is a translucent perovskite cell. Then, the two are matched through a variety of processes to give full play to their maximum advantages, and the solar cell efficiency is as high as 28.08%. It surpasses almost all current single cell efficiency.

Of course, whether a certain advanced solar cell technology can be mass-produced depends not only on its upper efficiency limit, but also on the cost of mass production. Judging from the technical complexity of the solar cell, there is almost no possibility of mass production in the short term, but it also provides a certain reference value for other companies.
